Viking Ramblers

North East Lincolnshire Walking Club

About Us
The Viking Ramblers were formed in the 1970's by Grimsby Postmen who loved walking - even in their spare time! We are now a fully inclusive group of around 33 members, from all walks of life. (No pun intended)
The Viking Ramblers is so named, due to our proximity to the Viking Way as it runs through Lincolnshire.
We enjoy walks, both locally and farther afield, as well as a variey of non-walking social events.
We regularly raise money for our main charity, the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance who carry out vital life saving work in our area. You can make donations on their website.
We meet once a month at the Royal Air Force Association              at 5 Alexandra Road, Cleethorpes, DN35 8LQ.
Have a look around our website, and if you fancy a bit of the action, contact us and we can arrange a 'taster' to give you a chance to see if we have what you are looking for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here we aim to answer the most commonly asked questions about our group. If you cannot find the answer here, then please go to our 'Contact Us' page.

  •  Do I have to be a certain age to join this group?
  • No, we are open to all age groups, however we do assume that many of our members will be busy during the week, so the majority of our walks are on a Sunday. Most of our social events take place on a Saturday evening.
  • Do I need to be a member of the Ramblers Association to join?
  • No, we are not a part of the Ramblers Association, we value our independence.
  • Is there a membership fee?
  • Yes, there is a small annual membership fee of £7 per person. This also gives you membership of the RAFA club, where we meet.
  • When and Where do you meet?
  • We meet once a month at the Royal Air Force Association club (RAFA) in Cleethorpes. We can be found lurking in the first floor front room. The RAFA club address is 5 Alexandra Road, Cleethorpes, DN35 8LQ (See 'About Us' page)
  • What sort of clothing and kit should I bring for walking?
  • The basics are: Good Walking boots, comfortable clothes ( jeans are not recommended , as they are uncomfortable when cold & wet), a small rucksack and some wet gear (waterproof jacket and over trousers). In winter you will need to dress in several thin layers and bring a hat and gloves. A water bottle is always recommended and / or a flask of something hot in Winter! Members can get discounts from the Millets shop in Grimsby, if they flash their membership card.
  • Do I need to bring packing up?
  • In most cases - no. Our regular Sunday walks, unfortunately, nearly always finish at a Pub, where we will have booked a table for Sunday dinner. Some like to bring a light snack for the tea break during the walk.
  • Do you only walk within Lincolnshire?
  • No, we are open to suggestions for walks anywhere. Obviously there are limits as to how far we can travel in a single day, and our regular Sunday walks tend to be in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire or South Yorkshire. HOWEVER! we do go on several trips away each year (long weekends, full weeks etc) and these trips take us far afield to such places as the Lake District, Derbyshire, Peak District, Scotland, Wales, Slovenia.
  • Do I need to be very fit?
  • No, most of our walks are between 5 - 7 miles and are walked at a reasonable pace. This is easily achievable for most people. There are longer walks on our trips away, but we always try to accommodate all levels of fitness.
  • Do I need to be able to read a map?
  • No, each walk is led by a walk leader, who will guide you along the walk. Anyone is welcome to suggest and / or lead a walk. If you want to learn how to read a map, just ask.
  • Can I get a lift to the start point?
  • If you need one, there is a good chance one of the members will be able to pick you up.
  • Can I bring my dog?
  • Yes, just be aware of the need to keep it on a lead where necessary (when going through open fields containing livestock)
